🎙️ Marathons, makeovers, and more

Good morning! It was a great day in the Capital City last Saturday; the Cornhuskers secured their first victory of the 2024 football season. Sure, it was against ourselves, but hey, it still counts, right? 😅

Friendly reminder: this Sunday, the marathon is going to turn downtown into a maze of sweaty determination. To my non-running friends, maybe take the scenic route to brunch. To my friends running, may your strides be like butter and your finish line photos be more flattering than those in your middle school year book.

In today’s LNKscoop:

  • History in the making at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo

  • Lincoln’s famous pink house gets a makeover

  • Block party for Cinco De Mayo

Let’s dive in.

The 47th Annual Lincoln Marathon

If you're planning to head downtown this weekend, you might want to reconsider. Between the Mayor's Run on Saturday and the Marathon and Half Marathon on Sunday, navigating through the capital city will be quite challenging. With over 6,500 participants expected at the starting line at 6:55 AM on Saturday, anticipate delays if you're venturing far and making your way downtown.

Grey is the new pink

For nearly 75 years, the neighbors of the Portsche family have either enjoyed or resented—the reaction depends on whom you ask—the sight of the 1950s family home, which is decorated from top to bottom in all things pink. From the kitchen to the bathroom, everywhere you looked, you were greeted with a lush pink ambiance. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and now this 'pink paradise' is on the market, ready to find its next owner. I just hope the new owners come up with a clever nickname for what is now the grey house.

New life at the Lincoln Zoo

It’s an exciting time at the Lincoln Zoo because a brand new Humboldt penguin chick has hatched, marking only the second occurrence in the zoo's history. Since 2021, Pebbles, the first hatched penguin, has been the star of the show, but now there’s a new contender in town.

Weighing in at a whopping 61.8 grams, this currently unnamed chick is spending time behind the scenes with its parents, Sharkbait and John Henry, as it gathers strength before stepping into the spotlight. The zoo will announce the name and sex of the penguin at a later date. In the meantime, what do you think they should name Lincoln’s newest flightless friend?

Share your suggestions with us! We’ll feature some of the funniest ones in next week’s article.
